What health care can minors consent to on their own?
To address mental health, any minor who is 14 years of age or older may apply for voluntary admission to a designated hospital for examination and treatment. Before admission, the minor shall give consent in writing that he or she understands that treatment will involve inpatient status; that he or she wishes to be admitted to the hospital; and that he or she consents to admission voluntarily, without any coercion or duress. The minor must also understand that inpatient treatment may be on a locked unit and that a requested discharge may be deferred if the treating physician determines that the minor needs treatment. If the minor is under 14 years of age, he or she may be admitted as a voluntary patient if he or she consents to admission, and if a parent or guardian makes written application.
If a minor who is 12 years of age or older is suspected to be dependent upon regulated drugs, to have venereal disease, or to be an alcoholic, and the finding of such is verified by a licensed physician, the minor may give his or her consent to medical treatment and hospitalization. The consent of the parent or legal guardian is not necessary to authorize such care. The parent or legal guardian shall be notified by the physician if the condition of a minor requires immediate hospitalization as the result of drug usage, alcoholism, or for the treatment of a venereal disease.
