In the 2023 session, Washington advocates saw the filing of HB1333, which would have established a “domestic violent extremism commission” in the attorney general’s office. In essence, the bill was attempting to create a “Disinformation Ministry” to target the speech and actions of anyone amplifying an opinion that goes against the mainstream narrative, including anti-mask and anti-vax messages. Once we learned of this underhanded and dangerous legislation, our advocates jumped into action. With almost 33,500 emails sent to policymakers, the bill was not able to gain the necessary steam and missed its deadline for passage.
