As a Florida parent, I am writing to ask you to please support SB 1634/HB 1059, the Parents’ Bill of Rights. This bill shows that Florida stands for families by affirming the fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing, education, and healthcare of their minor children.
Until a child reaches 18, having a parent in his or her corner is the single most important factor in that child’s success. Making family legislation a priority demonstrates that you understand the crucial role that parents play in their children’s day-to-day lives — and value the fact that families are the heart of our state. History tells us time and again: as the family goes, so goes the nation.
U.S. Supreme Court precedent makes parental rights paramount to all other interests. This bill upholds that precedent and promotes strong family values by encouraging clear communication — and access to information — within the nuclear family. It also keeps the family integral in navigating a child’s life by prohibiting the state and all other interests (political and otherwise) from infringing on parental rights without demonstrating an urgent and compelling need. Provisions like these provide important protections while encouraging family involvement and guidance during the most critical and formative years in a child’s life.
The bill also requires each district school board — in consultation with parents, teachers, and administrators — to develop and adopt a policy to promote parental involvement in the public school system. Lastly, the bill establishes that parents have the right to make healthcare decisions for their children and prohibits certain healthcare procedures from being administered without parental consent.
Parents, as the ultimate stakeholders, are the most invested in — and must continue to direct the decisions that determine — a child’s health and wellbeing. Please stand for Florida families and affirm the inherent freedoms that define who we are as Americans and as parents.
Please vote yes to SB 1634/HB 1059. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
