Our Stand: At-A-Glance
-
Artificial intelligence is no longer just a technology issue, it is a growing health issue for children and families.
-
As AI tools become more integrated into daily life, children are forming relationships with chatbots, consuming AI-generated content, and sharing sensitive personal data. These interactions can shape their mental health, emotional development, and sense of reality.
-
The AI Bill of Rights, is a critical step to protect children’s well-being. This legislation would:
-
Require parental consent before minors can engage with AI chatbot platforms.
-
Allow parents to monitor and limit interactions, including time and access
-
Require safeguards when AI systems detect self-harm or harmful behavior
-
Prevent companies from exploiting children’s personal data
-
- These protections matter because AI is not neutral. Some AI systems are designed to simulate emotional relationships, which can blur the line between human connection and technology. Lawmakers have already heard testimony from families impacted by harmful chatbot interactions, including cases tied to serious mental health consequences.
- Florida has the opportunity to lead. No state has yet passed a comprehensive AI Bill of Rights focused on protecting children at this level.
- Some policymakers suggest waiting for federal action. But our children’s health and safety cannot wait. Right now, there are no consistent safeguards to protect kids from psychological harm, overexposure, or data exploitation.
- ACTION: Tell your House Rep to support the AI Bill of Rights and protect the mental and emotional health of Florida’s children now.
