South Carolina: Health Freedom is Always a Fundamental Right
Our Stand: At-A-Glance
- UPDATED 2/20/2026: The bill is now scheduled to be heard in committee on March 4th at 9:30 am, it’s time to fully oppose the bill.
- Health freedom and parental rights must be protected at all times, not suspended during outbreaks or public health emergencies. We stand for informed consent, parental rights, religious freedom, medical privacy, and free speech.
- In response to measles concerns, legislation like S.897 risks expanding government authority over family medical decisions and weakening parental rights. Health freedom is not conditional. It is not something to be removed whenever the government declares a pandemic or outbreak.
- Measles is widely recognized as a typically mild, self-limiting infection in healthy individuals and is treatable. Vaccination is not the only approach to managing measles. Families deserve access to full information and the freedom to evaluate risks and options without coercion.
- If parental authority can be overridden during one outbreak, it can be overridden during the next. South Carolina families deserve consistent protection of their fundamental rights, regardless of the disease in question.
- ACTION: Email the Senate Medical Affairs Committee and urge them to vote no on S.897
