Ban Water Fluoridation in Tennessee
Our Stand: At-A-Glance
- HB 2396 / SB 0162 prohibits public water system operators from adding fluoride to their water systems. Here are key reasons why adding fluoride to water systems must stop:
- Lack of individual consent, Fluoride is a medical treatment added to public water without the consent of the people consuming it, removing personal choice over one’s own healthcare.
- Uncontrollable dosage, Unlike toothpaste or supplements, the amount of fluoride ingested through tap water cannot be regulated per individual — especially dangerous for infants and young children who may consume a disproportionate amount relative to their body weight with no safe way to measure or limit intake.
- Health and safety concerns, Many studies link excessive fluoride exposure to dental fluorosis, thyroid disruption, and neurodevelopmental concerns in children.
- Toothpaste is a cheaper, targeted alternative, almost all toothpaste contains fluoride, and toothpaste–which is spit out–delivers fluoride directly to the teeth.
- Costly burden on those who opt out, Consumers who wish to avoid fluoridated water must purchase bottled water or install reverse osmosis filtration systems, which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, effectively penalizing people who don’t want the additive.
