Can you imagine starting your day at work or in the home and watching the sun rise at 8:30 am? That’s the reality for many Americans if this bill becomes law.
Humans were designed to get light signals to help the body thrive; deviating from the natural light cycles has been shown to be detrimental to our health in many ways – depression and other mental health consequences, a lowered immune system, and more. There are other consequences to making an unnatural clock the norm – it’s darker in the morning hours which leads not only to things like depression, but also more car accidents involving students going to school.
It’s shocking this bill is in play at all. Americans have already overwhelmingly rejected making DST permanent, when it was pushed through by former President Nixon in the 1970s with the promise it would help the economy and ease the energy crisis, and it was quickly rejected by the American public. Children were killed in traffic accidents while on their way to school, and Americans hated the long, dark winter mornings. The Department of Transportation reported that the promised reduction in energy consumption didn’t happen.
Congress reversed the permanent DST experiment in only 10 months, rather than the 2 years it was set for, making it one of the fastest policy reversals in U.S. history!
But those who forget history are doomed to repeat it and this sleeper bill has been hiding in the shadows of the halls of Congress in recent years – it actually passed in the Senate in 2022 but did not make it through the House.
Arguments for DST vs standard (natural) time typically come down to economics over health. Both sides claim their position is safer, with less crime in a sunny evening or less car accidents on an unnaturally dark morning (especially involving school kids).
There is ample evidence that the time change twice a year is unwelcome and even dangerous and bad for our economy, however, this bill misses the mark by attempting to make DST permanent instead of reversing course and admitting we were wrong.
How many times will our policymakers try to assert their ideas and Science can best nature and our God-given design?
Tell your Senator not to let DST become the year-round “locked clock” that will harm Americans.
