Tennessee: Support a bill that prohibits coercion of vaccination and newborn screening
Our Stand: At-A-Glance
Update! April 16, 2024
- UPDATE! Just when you thought your work was over for this year’s session — we have a last-minute, very urgent call-to-action. These bills have passed the House and Senate, but with different language, and we need YOUR help in making sure the Senate version is adopted by the House and goes on to become law. The House version of the bill only applies to children under age two. The senate version applies to every one of any age! Let’s help get the Senate version to the Governor’s desk. Don’t let this bill die so close to the finish line!
- SB2151 / HB2861 is a great bill that recognizes the need for clarity and protection of informed consent and individual rights included in state law.
- This bill:
- Prohibits a healthcare provider from coercing an individual into receiving a vaccination.
- Prohibits a healthcare provider from misrepresenting TN state law regarding vaccinations, newborn screenings, and the availability of religious exemptions.
- Empowers the relevant licensing boards to take a disciplinary action against a healthcare provider who violates this law.
- Great news! The amendment to the bill includes a definition of “coerce” that is broad enough to catch the many ways coercion is now happening.
- “Coerce” means to compel a person to act by force, intimidation, or threat
- And the amendment does not limit the age it applies to.
- “A healthcare provider shall not coerce a parent or legal guardian of a newborn or other person to consent to vaccination.”
- Bill to be heard by full House Health Committee March 27 @ 3:30pm central, contact the committee now!
