Governor Holcomb has renewed the state of emergency into a second year. HCR18, authored by Rep. J. D. Prescott, would end the emergency and thereby cancel mask mandates and government-imposed social and business restrictions . It is our state legislature’s job to step in when a governor oversteps. We are asking our lawmakers to take those steps now. The crisis is over. Hospitalization rates have dropped to about a fifth of what they were, and herd immunity is essentially here.
The incentive to keep the emergency is the promise of federal dollars. The costs, however, of this emergency are already too high, with the closure of stores, limitations on business, delayed diagnosis, rising overdoses, suicide, domestic violence, unemployment and the loss of our social connections.
The quickest and surest way to lift restrictions in Indiana is to kill the emergency. We must rescind the mask mandate and drop virus regulations on businesses. Until we do so, we won’t get rid of the fear looming over society.
Some legislators will argue that we will lose federal funding if we drop the emergency. But, federal funding comes at a cost, too — including financial dependence, government red tape and the wasting of taxpayer dollars. It gives the government even more power to choose the winners and the losers
And if a state of emergency stays in place, new restrictions can be imposed on Hoosiers any time. This emergency can’t go on. It is too damaging and denies us our natural rights. It is time for the legislature to return power to the people.
